Cowgirl loves her dog

This photo was taken in Julian, California not long after I arrived in the USA. I was fascinated to see someone actually wearing a ‘cowgirl’ hat. I know this is going to sound so funny to the Americans reading this, but honestly when you live in another country, you aren’t sure whether to believe certain stereotypes exist. Anyway, I’m extremely happy to find that people actually wear Stetsons (is that what they’re called?) and when we were in Texas my dear husband had to physically remove me from the shop before I bought myself some boots and matching hat. Not sure that an Aussie girl could have pulled it off in SoCal.

Rusty aka Russ

As promised, here is another photo of Rusty. Every time I would stay at my sisters house, Rusty would have an impromptu photo session. He was always obliging…in fact he could hardly care less. The biggest challenge was actually getting his attention. Most dogs respond to food or whistles or balls or anything. Not Russ. The only thing we could do to get his attention was to drop his food bowl on the floor. Then his ears would perk up for a fraction of a second before he once again returned to his Zen state. This photo was taken next to a big window one afternoon while he was waiting for his parents to return. My sister, Emily chose this photo for a big canvas to hang on their newly painted, dark red wall. It looks stunning. I’m so thankful, that as a dog photographer, I have the opportunity to memorialise so many beautiful animals. In fact, I’m going to make an effort to take more photos of my own dog, Zoe.

RIP Russ

I’ve just returned home from a night out and have just read an email from my sister, letting me know that they had to put their boy Russ down today. He was an old boy. No one really knew exactly how old because he was found as a stray, but he’s been part of the family for many, many years. He was the slowest, gentlest, most laid back dog I have ever known. Because of the time difference between here and Australia I haven’t been able to talk to my sister, but I can only imagine how she and her fiance are feeling right now. All I know is that it was something to do with his stomach and he’s now buried “in his favourite spot in the back yard”. Rusty…we will all miss you and I’m so sad I didn’t get to see you one last time.

Unfortunately this is an old photo (taken three and a half years ago), but it was all I could find tonight. I’ll spend some time and provide a more fitting post tomorrow.

Jonty goes to sea

You’ve seen Jonty before in this photo. Jonty’s brother Bailey also dressed up as a sailor in this photo.

At one stage I had intended to produce a calendar of dog’s dressed up as different professions. My girl Zoe, was even photographed in a police hat and holding a baton. I really must try to find that photo. Anyway, that calendar never happened because I ended up taking on the job of photographing the calendar for the local dog rescue organisation, and I didn’t want to compete with a charity I was helping out :)

Wanting to be outside

Winery dogs seem to have the best life. They are free to come and go as they please. They can choose to get cuddles or to find a shady place for a sleep. Sometime though, you still have to wait for someone to open the door for you.

Golden Love

I truly hope everyone loves Golden Retrievers because….well, you might get to see quite a few this week. I went searching through my archives today, and whatever folder I opened seemed to have Golden Retriever photos in it.

I usually plays these games with myself, allowing fate to choose which photos I post each week. Often I get quite a mix of dog breeds, but this week it’s mostly Goldens. Enjoy.

Wilson Family Goldens

Yesterday I spent a hot, sunny day at Temecula Wine Country. I always love to visit the Wilson Creek Winery because their family of Golden Retrievers are usually wandering around. They sport such names as Cabernet and Chianti. I tell you what, in my next life I want to be a winery dog. They sure do get some attention.

I was visiting with a bunch of dog lovers, and I think the bottle of wine purchased most on this trip was this Golden Jubilee. Every purchaser said they bought it because of the beautiful photo of the dogs on the label. How’s that for marketing?

So I guess you are wondering who is hamming it up for the photo? Well, that’s Rebecca and George who are a couple of the top commentators on this blog. I guess it is now apparent that I must bribe them for those comments :)
