A slow day of shoe shining

This photo was taken along the banks of the Mandakini River in Chitrakoot during my 2007 visit to India. It’s a town which does not really see western tourists, so I was certainly a person if interest as I wandered around the streets with my camera. I found that I rarely had problems photographing in the streets, because the locals soon realised I was focussing my photographic efforts on the dogs and they probably thought I was a little bit soft in the head. I tended to gather a crowd most places I went and some of the locals would often take me to see other dogs in different locations. It was certainly a surreal experience.

Holy Cow

In early 2007 I spent some time in India. During that time I photographed the local dogs in their environment. Today’s photo demonstrates the order of things in India. Cows are considered Sacred and Holy. They are plentiful and roam the streets freely. They live by scavenging for scraps and off the charity of humans. In this photo, the calf has been given some food by the people in the background. The puppy decides that he wants some and is eventually shooed away by the people so that the calf can continue to eat in peace. The poor pup is very hungry and will do anything for food, even if is is just a few leaves.

Waltzing Matilda

Matilda was foster dog I photographed in Canberra back in early 2007. Checkout that grass (or lack of grass) behind her. I’d almost forgotten how bad the drought was.

Quite the view from here

Asia

Asia lives with Bron from Maadii Pets in Canberra, Australia. Maadii means ‘good dog’ in Thai so you can see that Bron has quite an affinity for all things Asian. Bron and Rachael used to dog sit Zoe if we ever had to go away for the weekend and couldn’t take her with us.

I’m currently looking for a good reliable pet sitter or dog boarding place in San Diego because I often have to go away for work. It’s such a hard thing to find someone trustworthy to look after your best friend….even worse than trying to find a hairdresser who doesn’t turn your hair a shocking shade of orange. In the meantime I am very grateful to George for doggy sitting Zoe for us.

Seeking enlightenment in India

There is a universal truth about dogs in India. Wait for 30 seconds and you capture them having a good scratch. While I was over there I picked up a puppy (something which seemed to horrify my fellow travellers) and it was so infested with fleas that it was almost out of a horror movie. Next time I go, I think I’ll take a suitcase of flea treatment. Poor things.

Man’s best friend 2

I love a fella who is so secure in his manhood that he will cuddle a small fluffy dog in public. I do not know him, and no I don’t have his phone number.
