Cowgirl loves her dog

This photo was taken in Julian, California not long after I arrived in the USA. I was fascinated to see someone actually wearing a ‘cowgirl’ hat. I know this is going to sound so funny to the Americans reading this, but honestly when you live in another country, you aren’t sure whether to believe certain stereotypes exist. Anyway, I’m extremely happy to find that people actually wear Stetsons (is that what they’re called?) and when we were in Texas my dear husband had to physically remove me from the shop before I bought myself some boots and matching hat. Not sure that an Aussie girl could have pulled it off in SoCal.

Win a FREE book from A Dog A Day

Today, A Dog A Day has reached a milestone. It’s been six months since the first post on this blog and of course we need to celebrate in style. To commemorate half a year of daily dog photos, I’m putting together a book of favourites. It will probably be called something clever and witty like ‘The best of A Dog A Day-  2008′ unless someone can suggest something better. I hope to have the books on sale by the end of October and of course, all proceeds will go to charity. So what next?

Well, I need your help! Each person who provides input to this book will go into the draw to win a copy. And it’s oh so easy to help. Leave a comment with the answers to the following questions and you get two entries into the draw. If you are shy, you can email me with your answers and you’ll get one entry into the draw.

1. I need help selecting the best images featured on this blog from 6 April 2008 - 6 Oct 2008. Please let me know your FIVE favourite images on this blog from the last 6 months. You might have to go back through the archives to refresh your memory.

2. Suggest a dog related charity who would be worthy recipients of the proceeds from this project.

3. (desirable) Suggest a catchy name for the book.

And that’s it! Easy huh? I’m accepting input until 7pm PST Monday 12 Oct 08 (12pm AEDT 13 Oct 08). I will announce the winner of a FREE book on the following day.

An antidote to doom and gloom

When watching the news tonight about the largest single-day point decline in the history of the American stock market, it’s easy to get caught up in the doom and gloom. As an antidote, I think I’m going to look at cute photos of adorable doggies and know that everything will be ok. This is a history making day, and I think the world is going to change a lot in the near future. I’m doing my best to stay grounded and remember what’s really important in my life….family, friends and my fur-baby.

This photograph was taken on 4th of July, but it’s taken me this long to even look at the shots I took that day!

Wanting to be outside

Winery dogs seem to have the best life. They are free to come and go as they please. They can choose to get cuddles or to find a shady place for a sleep. Sometime though, you still have to wait for someone to open the door for you.

Winery Dog at Longshadow Ranch

This photo was taken at Longshadow Ranch Winery in Temecula, CA last weekend. It’s a fun place to visit and they have quite a few beautiful, big draft horses on the property. At the time I was taking shots of this dog, one of the horses decided to make some noise, drawing everyone’s attention.

Monterey Canning Co

Phew! I’m finally home and slept last night in my own bed for the first time in nearly a month. To be honest with you, I’m just plain exhausted and feel like a need a holiday. I’ve been keeping a rather hectic pace for the last nine months since we moved to the USA, and I really do feel like a need some downtime from travelling (famous last words). I’ve calculated that in 9 months I’ve been to 14 American States and four Canadian provinces. I think that’s a little crazy and my body is starting to agree. We’ll see though. I’m meant to be travelling to another international meeting next month, but I’m not sure whether I’ll be going. If it doesn’t happen, I’m going to spend some quality time gazing at my navel for a few months.

I hope to be catching up on everyone’s blogs over the coming weeks. I’ve missed you all….so I’ll be dropping by soon. In the meantime, it’s time for a doggy photo from my visit to Monterey in June. The Aquarium is well worth the visit and the drive down to Monterey from San Francisco is really beautiful (provided you don’t get stuck in Wildfires like we did).

Gone Fishing

This was one of the first dog photographs I captured when I moved to San Diego. We were investigating our new neighbourhood and were quite taken with our proximity to San Diego Bay. This little fellow was keeping his humans company while they were fishing.
