Happy Independence Day America!
July 4, 2008 – 7:02 am
I tried my best to find a dog photo suitably American for this Independence Day post. Alas, this was the best I could come up with. This photo was taken last week at the Surf Dog Competition at Imperial Beach, south of San Diego. Americans seem to love nothing more than heading to the beach for their vacation, so this picture seemed fitting.
Today I don’t intend to be travelling too far. I live on Coronado Island which seems to be one of those places that people flock to on their holidays. I have been warned that getting on and off the island on the 4th of July is next to impossible, so I’ll be enjoying the local festivities for my first Independence Day in the USA.
Here’s a fun video which proves that dogs and fireworks do not mix. Do not try this at home.
A view from a shuttered window

Today’s photo was taken in Dubrovnik, Croatia. I’d have to say this is one of the most beautiful towns I’ve ever visited (and I’ve been to quite a lot). The original settlement happened in the 7th century and since then a white-walled and terracotta-roofed walled town has grown between the mountains and the sea. It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
As a photographer I happily navigated my way through the cobblestone streets, wandered along the length of the city walls, climbed the mountain behind for stunning views, drank coffee in little cafes and took in some culture in the multitude of art galleries.
The only downside was the influx of cruise ship tourists during the middle of the day. However, since I was staying in a guest house just outside the walls I could get in early and stay late to miss the hordes.
I loved my time in Croatia and would dearly like to go back.
Tug-O-War

Today’s photo was taken the same day as this one at Coronado Dog Beach. It was a gloomy old day, but it made for some lovely diffuse light. When I saw these two dogs wrestling with this toy I knew I had to capture it. The poor old lab was so exhausted after 10 minutes of wrestling with the energetic little bulldog that he just sat down on his rump and wouldn’t move anymore.
This is what I love about the dog beach. Dogs who have never met before get to play and interact with strangers. I know it does Zoe wonders to socialise with other dogs. I think sometime she forgets she’s not a human.
