Choccy Lab

Photographed in bushland near my previous home in Canberra, Australia. This place looked remarkable in the late afternoon sun and the best thing was that it was fully enclosed so all the dogs could run free. It was such a great location to live and we do miss it. It’s funny (but also sad) how we take things for granted until we no longer have them. These days I try my best to be thankful every day.

I know I have quite a lot of photos of Labrador Retrievers on this blog. The truth is, Labradors were hands down the most popular breed I photographed when I was running my pet photography business in Canberra.

Doggy Backpack

Photographed in Newcastle, Australia circa 2005.

The ways in which people transport their pets will never cease to amaze me. Apologies for the slightly fuzzy doggy. I was feeling a little nostalgic for those years I lived in Newcastle and this photo reminds me of the many, many hours I enjoyed down at the Honeysuckle foreshore.

A Dog A Day continues…every day. Yay!!

As you may have guessed by the existence of today’s post, I’ve decided to keep posting a dog photo EVERY day, including weekends.  I really appreciated the advice from those of you who left comments on my original post.

Thanks to Mare, VR and Lauren for giving me permission to have a break on weekends. It’s funny you know…I didn’t really feel like I needed a break from blogging I was just more concerned that no-one is reading. I guess all bloggers feel like that sometimes, but thanks for letting me know that it is ok to give myself a break every now and then :)

Thanks to Jill, Emilee, Grace and Leesia who as fellow pet photographers always drop by to let me know someone is reading. The best thing about blogging is meeting such great people (albeit over the internet) and forming little communities. We really should start a pet photographers convention or something. Every other genre of photography seem to have yearly get togethers. Why not us!

And lastly, but certainly not least, thanks to Rebecca and Polly for reminding me why I started this project in the first place. It started as a personal project, where I set out to present 365 days of dog photos from my archives as well as to challenge myself get out into the world and build upon my collection. I can certainly say it has achieved its purpose and also brought so many wonderful people into my life. Sometimes I want to give my blog a hug.

A hair trim at the dog show

One day in 2006 I headed to the Canberra Dog Show to capture some shots. Having never really been exposed to the intricacies of a dog show before, I certainly had my eyes opened. Some of the long haired breeds seemed to require a full-time hair stylist. I witnessed trims, straightenings, blow waves, ribbons and bows and the application of plenty of hair spray. This little Miniature Collie sure looks impressed with the whole affair.

Ariel

Ariel is a local of O’Connor in Canberra, Australia. When I first met her I was in the area for coffee with friends. She was just wandering around and I thought she was lost so I checked the nametag on her collar. It said, “Hi my name is Ariel. I’m not lost.” Evidently, she’s a free spirit who can come and go as she pleases.

Over the year that I visited the precinct I came to know that Ariel came from the Cafe and Art Gallery directly behind her in this photo. I would often find her relaxing in the sun on the sofa, sitting at a patrons feet while they played chess out the front, and in winter curled up on one of the armchairs inside. She was a very laid back girl, but I could often coax her into a makeshift game of fetch. In this shot, we played with a stick no longer than my small finger. I think she looks like she’s smoking a cigar.

Zoe gets all optically disillusioned

This is my girl Zoe who often has to be my model when I’m trying something new. This shot was taken near the lake in Canberra, Australia. I was working with one flash mounted on a tripod to the right of the image to get this effect. She’s such a good girl and will usually model for me even though I can tell she’d rather be off sniffing things.

Ye Old English Pop Art

Today I’ve decided to bring you something a little different. I photographed this gorgeous Old English Sheepdog in my studio last year and really loved the shapes and texture of his muzzle, eyes and ears. The Old English Sheepdogs really do have a distinctive style about them, I guess because we are so used to seeing the Dulux Dog in advertisements.

About the time of this photo shoot I had just stumbled across Jamie’s fantastic work at Cowbelly Pet Photography. She was producing these beautiful ’Decopaw Designs‘ from her pet photographs and even though I don’t have a hope of matching her style, I thought a little diversion into Doggy Pop Art might be fun. What do you think? Like it?

Oh, and you have to check out these handcrafted needle felted dogs at Kay’s K9s. They are just adorable. You can order a little miniature of your very own puppy. Too cute for words. You must check them out.
