The protector

Over the Christmas holidays I spent three weeks in Central America. One night while in Guatemala I stayed with a local family in a tiny village called San Jorge La Laguna. The father was a Mayan priest and the eldest daughter had been crowned ‘Miss Maya Guatemala’ earlier in the year. We enjoyed trying on her crowns and taking some photos of her. Who knew we’d meet a celebrity?

The next morning as we waited in the village square for our transport, I decided to find some dogs to photograph. I came across a small pack with some pups. This dog was extremely protective of this puppy. Who knows if they were related, but I guess dogs treat their pack as their family. He kept an eye on me the whole time and when he started emitting a low growl, I decided to back off.

Taking some time

I’ve decided to take a little time away from Dog A Day. I have some other personal projects which are taking much of my brainspace and I just don’t have enough inspiration to bring forth new photos and witty repartee every day. I think the blog is suffering from the lack of attention I have been able to give it. I really need to give myself permission to have a little break and hopefully I’ll be back soon with a new enthusiasm.

If you are on Facebook, I’ll still be there. Check out the Thousand Hound Photography Facebook page.

Guatemalan Dog in Profile

On the day this photo was taken we were travelling for about 12 hours from the south to the north of Guatemala. It was a long day made even longer when our driver discovered a flat tire at one of the military checkpoints. It took an hour to remove, repair and replace the tire, during which time I went for a wander around the local area. I found a pig, an extremely drunk guy on a bike who managed to crash on the side of the road right in front of me, and this dog. I thought you might appreciate the dog photo most.

Scavenging

This shot was taken in Panahachel, Guatemala. This was the day my heart started breaking. The dogs in Mexico were pretty well off, but many of the Guatemalan dogs were in bad shape. I wanted to adopt them all.

The strange thing for me was seeing people with dogs as pets. I get when a poor country has a stray dog problem, but when I see people with pets I wonder how they feel about all the other poor dogs without homes. *sigh* I desperately would like to move to one of these towns and do everything I can for the stray population.

On a lighter note: Happy Birthday to Polly, who’s a regular commenter and Mum to Bailey and Jonty.
