The Soul Dog Collection - One
July 31, 2008 – 7:47 am
The Soul Dog collection was put together during my first semester at the Australian National University. I had enrolled in the certificate of photography at the School of Arts. It was meant to take me two years to complete the course on a part time basis, but after one semester I found out we were moving to the USA, so I put my studies on hold.
The body of work I submitted at the end of six months consisted of six large canvasses, each featuring a close up portrait of a dog who was making direct eye contact with me. The premise was that the eyes are the window to the soul. I was trying to get across that dogs are not mere soul-less creatures, but do in fact have a very important place in this world.
The first of the collection was the inspiration for the remainder of the images. I completely fell in love with this image of Lexie and when I saw it I knew how I wanted to complete the body of work. This montage shows the completed canvas. While the processing I’ve undertaken for this series looks a little less than perfect on the computer screen, the results on canvas were magic.
I really hope that when I return to Australia get to go back to Canberra so I can complete this course.
Over the next six weeks I’ll bring you each of the images in the collection.
Lilly
July 17, 2008 – 7:46 am
Lilly is a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy who I photographed last year. You probably recognise this photo from my current masthead. Lilly was the winner of a competition when I was looking for more puppies to photograph and she was just so photogenic in all her shots. Poor Lilly had a bit of a rough start to life and had to undergo operations on her eyes when she was only little. Knowing this, I really love her beautiful eyes in this photo.
A Poll
June 23, 2008 – 4:30 pm
I’m happy to report that A Dog A Day has been running for 80 days. So far I’m really happy to have so many awesome regular readers. Thanks so much for dropping by and for your continued support. Now it’s my time to give something back. I want to know what it is that you want to read about. Of course, the photos will keep coming, I just want to focus my discussions more towards what you, the blog reader, wants to hear. Please complete this simple poll to let me know what you think. You should be able to vote multiple times if there a few options that take your fancy. If there is something I’ve missed, please leave me a comment.

Of course, it’s not a real post without a Dog photo! Here’s Nemo once again.
Finding Nemo
June 10, 2008 – 8:00 am
In early 2007 I was really starting to ramp up my pet photography business. I had a steady stream of clients and I was looking to improve processes and start on the next direction the business was going to take. That’s all history now, because my ‘real job’ took priority when I was offered an awesome position in San Diego for three years.
Just before I found out about the move, I had designed this postcard featuring a handsome German Shorthaired Pointer named Nemo. I had a whole bunch printed, but I never really got around to using them at all. The process was a lot of fun, and I’d really like to learn more about graphic design. Perhaps I should do a course, or…..maybe I have enough on my plate and I should just stick to experimentation :) A good start might be a redesign of the blog to make it look a little more funky. What do you think?
Lexie
April 24, 2008 – 8:00 am
Lexie is a German Shorthaired Pointer and is hands down the most photogenic girl I’ve ever photographed. Because she was one of my earliest clients when I first started my business I still hold a very special place in my heart for her. In fact I still have a 600mm x 600mm canvas of Lexie gracing my walls at home for the time being.
Starting along this journey has truly been a wonderful experience for me. People I met through my pet photography have become my friends and I’ve been lucky enough to experience all life special occasions with my previous clients.
For instance, Lexie’s Mum and Dad got married sometime after their doggy photoshoot, so I was lucky enough to capture the wedding in which Lexie led Mum down the aisle. Now Lexie’s Mum is living in America too and I get to catch up with her tonight in Washington DC.
I hope she gets a nice surprise when she opens today’s post.
