Happy Halloween

Is Happy Halloween the right thing to say? It just doesn’t seem right for some reason. If Halloween is all about ghouls and ghosts then why would we say that is happy? Anyway, I guess you can tell that we don’t really ‘do’ Halloween in Australia so the whole experience is new to me. Having said that, it’s all a bit of fun.

The other morning I was walking Zoe past our neighbours house and when I checked to see what she was sniffing I let out a small scream (It was really small OK!). Our neighbours had planted a fake, severed hand in their front yard and I completely wasn’t expecting it. I think I made their day though. I could hear peals of laughter coming from their house.

Tonight I’m going to a small party at a friends house and we’re having cocktails and I’m carving my first pumpkin. I think they took pity on me when I asked what I had to do when kids came trick or treating. It’s so much fun living in a new country!

Kudos to Mel for the design and photography for this shot. We put it together for the ARF 2008 Calendar, and I think I was the dog wrangler for this particular session. Mel had the best ideas!

Harry

Harry is a georgeous old Doberman-cross who I photographed in early 2007. He was a rescue and was living a lovely life on a big property out of town with his two wonderful humans and two other rescued doggies. I had a call from one of Harry’s Mums during the week. Harry had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and did not have long to live. I promptly cleared my schedule and arranged to go out and spend a whole morning with the family. Harry was having a good day and I’m so glad I managed to get some beautiful photos of him enjoying the sun, sitting by the fire and chasing his big old ball around the yard. Sadly, Harry passed away a couple of days later. All I know is that Harry was so lucky to have been rescued and given the opportunity to live a good life in his last years.

The Parliamentarian

Striker is a Doberman Pinscher who was quite the star as a puppy. In late 2006 I was commissioned to take Striker’s photo for an article in the December edition of Dogs New South Wales magazine. For being such a handsome boy, he ended up on the front cover.

You’ve gotta love being able to take photos of a dog in front of Parliament House. Do you think it’ll work for me at the White House?
