Give me some attitude

This kid loves the camera…and I think it loves him. One thing I noticed in rural India is that people love to be in photographs. It’s a photographers dream. This shot was taken in Chanderi, India.

Happy Halloween

Is Happy Halloween the right thing to say? It just doesn’t seem right for some reason. If Halloween is all about ghouls and ghosts then why would we say that is happy? Anyway, I guess you can tell that we don’t really ‘do’ Halloween in Australia so the whole experience is new to me. Having said that, it’s all a bit of fun.

The other morning I was walking Zoe past our neighbours house and when I checked to see what she was sniffing I let out a small scream (It was really small OK!). Our neighbours had planted a fake, severed hand in their front yard and I completely wasn’t expecting it. I think I made their day though. I could hear peals of laughter coming from their house.

Tonight I’m going to a small party at a friends house and we’re having cocktails and I’m carving my first pumpkin. I think they took pity on me when I asked what I had to do when kids came trick or treating. It’s so much fun living in a new country!

Kudos to Mel for the design and photography for this shot. We put it together for the ARF 2008 Calendar, and I think I was the dog wrangler for this particular session. Mel had the best ideas!

So tired

This morning I feel so weary. I feel like this dog looks…ready to stay in bed. I had another sleepless night caused by too much thinking. If anyone has any remedies (which don’t involve drinking myself to sleep) I’d be happy to hear them. I tried meditating, breathing, stretching etc, but these were mighty strong thoughts and were not going to be persuaded to go away.

Regardless, we are up a little early this morning and are hiking Cowles Mountain with Zoe as planned. We still need to get out early to avoid the extreme heat that hits after about 10am. Bring on winter I say (sorry to all those who don’t enjoy our lovely SoCal winters).

Winery Dog at Longshadow Ranch

This photo was taken at Longshadow Ranch Winery in Temecula, CA last weekend. It’s a fun place to visit and they have quite a few beautiful, big draft horses on the property. At the time I was taking shots of this dog, one of the horses decided to make some noise, drawing everyone’s attention.

A Dog A Day has issues

It seems my website has finally come up after being down all day. I still can’t upload photos so it is lucky that I already had this post half prepared… otherwise today would have been my first dog-free day. It could well have been a disaster!

Also, it looks like I’m not getting my emails from the server either. It seems eerily quiet having nothing in my inbox for a day. Hopefully all will be back to normal tomorrow. If it is not, I will get back to posting as soon as I can.

Duke - Before and after

On the weekend I went searching through my archives for some more dog photos to post on the blog over the coming month. I came across some old JPEGs of Duke, who is the dog of friends of ours who we were staying with for a weekend. At the time I was just starting in photography and was snapping at any and everything. Duke was a somewhat willing participant in my photographic lessons, so I have a handful of images of him. None of them were screaming at me to post to the blog, but I thought I should do some processing on at least one of them to include.

So here it is….the first time I’m exposing my before and afters to the world. I find that I really do undertake different processing methods depending on my mood at the time.  On the weekend I just wanted to do some quick tweaks to make the image presentable, so I was in a very minimalist mood. Here’s what work Duke has had done:

  1. Dodge and burn on the eyes. I find this makes them look a little more glassey. Over the years I’ve tried different methods, but dodge and burn is my current choice.
  2. Increase saturation and contrast to my liking. Luckily on this photo the blacks hadn’t come out too blue. When I was solely shooting JPEGs, correcting the white balance would be the bane of my existence, especially on black dogs. In fact, now that I look at him again, perhaps he is a little blue. What do you think?
  3. Sharpen. I usually stick to sharpening the face or specific features I want to be crisp. Sharpening that background would have started to look weird.

I have to post-process all of my images because I have turned off all in-camera contrast and sharpening. I like to have final say on how the images look and don’t want my camera deciding that for me. While I used to shoot solely in JPEG, I now shoot mostly in RAW. The images you see on this site are a real mix of each. For example, all photos from India was shot in JPEG because I was backpacking and did not want to lug too much data storage around with me for weeks.

I hope this helps at least a few people. I know that when I was starting out I would be distressed that my photos didn’t look as good as most that I saw. I soon came to realise that the in-camera work is only part of the process. Post-processing adds a whole other dimension to making your images say what you want them to.

Luna Park

Over the weekend I decided to go back through my archives to find some more dog photos to bring to you all over the next month or so. I came across a series of photos taken in early 2007 when I spent the day in St. Kilda, which is an inner city suburb of Melbourne, Australia. St. Kilda is a very funky neighbourhood located on the waterfront and is full of great restaurants and bars. It has a great vibe, not unlike Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco.

St. Kilda is also home to the historic amusement park called Luna Park, which is featured in today’s photo. The park opened in 1912 and has been operating ever since. It is the first of two Luna Parks still operating in Australia. The other is located on Sydney Harbour. The main historic features of this park include the iconic “Mr Moon” gateway (1912) which every Australia knows so well and the Scenic Railway (1912) which is the oldest continously-operating roller coaster in the world.
