Zoe by the Fireplace

We’re home from my work trip/holiday in Canada and the first order of business this morning was to collect Zoe from Camp Diggity Dogs where she’s been having her own special vacation. Brendan was going to collect her later this morning, but there was no way I was going in to work without seeing her first.

As soon as she saw us, she went mad. Running around like a puppy, moaning and groaning in an anxious way that indicated we should never leave her again. Once we got home, I let Zoe into the yard and I went through another door. She started crying and yelping to be let in, like I’ve never heard before. Now she’s just following me around the house with her ball in her mouth and she’s groaning a lot. Poor dog. She’s so excited to be home. I think she missed us and much as we missed her.

When queried why we hadn’t seen much of Zoe on the doggy daycare webcam, we were told that Zoe spent all her days sitting in the Cabana with a ball firmly planted in her mouth. Apparently she got up every now and then to chase a new ball and make a swap, but mostly did a lot of relaxing. Well she is getting on a bit after all.

It’s nice to be home.

Ah, that’s fascinating stuff Mia. I never knew, thanks for explaining the tattoo!

  2. What a beautiful dog, that Zoe. Love those expressive and dark eyes…

Mia, Bailey has a tattoo in his ear from when he was desexed although it appears that Goldies (in Australia anyway) don’t have the same kennel tatts that GSDs have. By the way, Rachel is staying overnight. I knew she was OK when she came around to meet Jont and Bailey and she immediately got down and sat on the floor with them. They’ll be much happier than in a Canberra kennel.

In Australia, all pedigree German Shepherds get a unique tattoo in their right ear as puppies of about 7- 8 weeks. The tattoo is made up of 3 letters (identifying the kennel prefix, unique to that kennel in Australia), followed by a 3 digit number indicating the puppy number bred by that kennel (”ABC123″). Both state and national records are kept and this tattoo is then used as the means of identification for the purpose of hip, elbow, haemophilia and breed survey schemes. It also means the dog is very traceable in the event of loss or theft. (Thanks google) She also had a tattoo when she was desexed, but I can’t find it anymore.

I presume other breeds have them as well, but they have floppy ears so it’s hard to tell. Any parents of pedigree dogs that can confirm this?

awwww (squeak) she luuves you! I can just picture Zoe with her ball and a concerned look on her face when you shut the door. She just wants to be close to her mama. She is such a sweetie. LOVE this shot of her. Like I said, don’t stop the regular ‘portrait’ work- you do it so well. :-)

HEYYYYYY- I just noticed she has a TATTOO in her ear!! What for eh?? Sorry, I should probably know this but I have to confess that I don’t!

Hey Polly. The Furkids will love Rachel. I know Zoe did. Is Rachel staying overnight or just having visits? Zoe has not moved all day. I even tried to play ’soccer’ with her earlier, but she would not move. I think she is completely worn out.

Mia, what a beautiful girl your ‘fur-kid’ is! Don’t you feel guilty as all get out when they react like that on your return? Thanks to your recommendation, I’ve got Rachel from Maadii Pets coming to petsit for us when we go to Sydney for a wedding in July, Jonty and Bailey will think it’s heaven. Sounds like Zoe enjoyed her holiday though (even if she’d never admit it!)
