As Brendan and I were wandering through the almost deserted streets of Idyllwild, California one Monday afternoon we met a man with this handsome boy. I know the photo doesn’t do his size any justice, but he is a huge dog. I was told what breed he was, but since I had never heard of it before, I promptly forgot it.
If you know what breed he is, leave me a comment with the answer. First correct answer (I’m sure it will come to me as soon as I hear it) will get a $50 Thousand Hound Photography gift voucher to use in the Thousand Hound store. If you don’t know the answer, leave me a comment anyway. If no-one has the correct answer, the best comment will win the voucher! Winner will be announced on 22 May 08.
Hint: He’s of Russian origin and is a natural guardian.

There is a breeder in Sydney, we have one of their pups, at 7 months he is nearly 50kg and we call him “Tikhon” which I believe is Russian for “quite one” (temperament, not bark).
They are a magnificent breed and he guards or house, horses and alpaca’s.
Its a Caucasian Ovtcharka.
Mia, Not sure but is he a Leonbergher (not sure of the spelling). Still quite a rare breed in Oz but a friend got one a few years ago from a breeder in Melbourne and her girl looked just like this!
Just a guess (I went a Googling!), but is it a Caucasian Mountain Dog? He’s beautiful, I can tell by his face and head that he must be a huge dog. He looks very thick.
Is it a Manible?
I think it’s a Caucasian Ovtcharka. These dogs are beautiful…and huge… I met one when I volunteered at the animal shelter…
